Back in 2001, rookie sensation Mark Caguioa who entered the PBA as a total unknown astounded the Filipino basketball enthusiasts with his blazing moves, killer crossovers, and high looping tear drops. In his first year in the league and in the Finals, Caguioa played along the veterans Vergel Meneses and Jun Limpot. Their opponent, the San Miguel Beermen, was the league’s powerhouse team back then when Danny Ildefonso dominates every big man at the post and Danny Siegle was at the peak of his career.
The young blonde Caguioa battled with all of his heart and provided the spark his team desperately needed for the series but the Beermen were so powerful. The Beermen took the first two games of the series before Ginebra rallied two straight to make it a 2 game apiece. On Game 5 of the series, the Beermen showed their depth on a tight 98-95 victory against the aging lineup of Ginebra. The powerhouse team continued its dominance on Game 6 by blowing away the Kings on a 20-point deficit to take home the championship at the score of 95-75.
